Job DescriptionThe Basic Purpose and Primary Responsibility of the person in this position shall be to serve as chief executive and staff officer working with the Directors of the General Board of Global Ministries, encouraging development of responsible policy, and carrying out such policies within the mandates of General Conference, the Board's charter, and bylaws. Some Essential Functions of this job include, but are not limited to: Develop, present, and interpret to the Board, the Connectional Table, and the General Council on Finance and Administration, and in cooperation with the General Treasurer and related staff, a recommended program budget, which is cognizant of and makes maximum use of available resources; and consult with the appropriate units and committees of the Board on the allocation of fund balances, and make recommendations to the Board. Administer the Board's program within goals and policies set by the Board, and present major policy issues to the Directors of Global Ministries. Serve as the primary spokesperson for the Board to The United Methodist Church, ecumenical bodies, and the world; including maintaining liaison with the World Methodist Council, the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, Church World Service and the World Council of Churches. Key points of Major Accountability are in providing leadership for the largest agency of The United Methodist Church. Ensuring that the mission of the church is on the cutting edge of what is necessary to advance the cause of mission, as well as ensuring that the Board acts ethically and with adherence to the mandates of The United Methodist Church.
RequisitesEducation: Ph.D. or equivalent (master's degree with years of experience to Ph.D. level), preferably in the fields of international affairs, theology, and/or human relations. Other specialized knowledge: Study or experience in the area of church development essential. Must be fluent in English and be or become conversant in at least two other languages within a prescribed time-frame. Experience: Minimum of ten (10) years with a mission institution or organization, working with local, state, city or regional church or development agencies; must have inter-cultural experience as a supervisor or administrator.
